What Is Rosacea?

Rosacea is a chronic skin condition that primarily affects the face, causing redness, visible blood vessels, and sometimes small, pus-filled bumps. It often begins with a tendency to blush or flush more easily than others. Over time, the redness can spread and become more persistent, affecting the nose, chin, cheeks, and forehead. Rosacea is more common in people with fair skin and tends to flare up periodically. While the condition is not curable, its symptoms can be managed with appropriate treatment.

What Are the Causes of Rosacea?

Genetics

A family history of rosacea increases the risk of developing the condition. Those with a genetic predisposition are more susceptible to this chronic skin disorder.

Immune System

An overactive immune response may play a role in rosacea by triggering inflammation and redness. This response is often exaggerated in individuals with rosacea.

Environmental Factors

Sun exposure, wind, and temperature extremes can trigger or worsen rosacea symptoms. Environmental conditions often lead to flare-ups and make the skin more reactive.

Dietary Triggers

Spicy foods, hot beverages, and alcohol are known to cause flare-ups in some individuals. These triggers increase blood flow to the skin, worsening redness and irritation.

Microbial Involvement

Certain microorganisms on the skin, such as Demodex mites, may contribute to the development of rosacea. These microbes can aggravate the condition, leading to increased inflammation.
